Dopey Manticore by fyre-flye Dopey Manticore by fyre-flye
When I submitted the premise for the pilot, there was concern that facing a Manticore would be too scary for kids, so I designed him kind of dopey to help ease worry. Imagine my surprise when I got the note that he didn't look threatening enough!! It's not often that you're happy to get a note, but I was. I like the final one better.

This is a cool picture. The story is interesting. I do appreciate how MLP pushes the envelope of what in a show for "little girls". My favorite example is the finale of the fourth season. Twilight and Tirek nuke each other in an intense battle. It blew my mind.

He's gorgeous! I designed a Manticore OC and I'll probably still do lots of tweaking before I'm happy but I think they're just so cute!

Hey Lauren ( don't answer if you don't want too!) Did you have any favorite villains on the show? And witch was your favorite to design?

Manticores in MLP are cute and cuddly...unlike their real-life myth counterparts monstrosity:[link]

I agree with you, merc267, Parents are really paranoid when it comes to Kids TV. I mean, seriously, the way they protest against "Scary Content" or "Inappropriate Content", I get the impression that they have the idea that kids are so stupid that they would be scared by stuff like what was going on in G1 My Little Pony, or too young to understand concepts like Death, Famine, War, Racism, or Disability. It's uptight killjoys like these that lead to Generation 3.

Seriously, if Doctor Who, a show that is watched by Adults and Kids alike, can have terrifying monsters like the Weeping Angels or the Cybermen and receive praise and joy from young and old fans of the show, Then why can't Friendship is Magic have any sort of Moderately threatening beast without Parents throwing a Shit-Fit and throwing a tantrum at Hasbro.
merc267 Featured By Owner Feb 8, 2013
Too threatening? Really have they've seen Chrysalis's transformation or herself in the comic series? Parents are becoming too protective these days...

Too threatening and then not threatening enough? Some people can't seem to make up their minds when it comes to the dark stuff in kid's shows, can they?

Ms. Faust, if you ask me, I like him just the way he is.
FluffySundae Featured By Owner Oct 27, 2011
Needs more of a 'stache if you ask me. xD Then he'd be a REAL manticore... just without a manly face.

I love it! Just one problem...
Manticores have human heads, but to me, it kinda just looks like a lion with dragon wings...But it's still good!

Dopey would be a really cute name for him~

I always see a copyright of MLP belonging to Hasbro and you, but I don't understand, are you the animator or something??
Len-n-n Featured By Owner Jun 7, 2012
She's Lauren Faust. She was Executive Producer of the first season, and consulting producer of the second. She basically created MLP:FIM for Hasbro.

This reminds me a lot of Makunga (voiced by everyone's favorite actor, Alec Baldwin) from Madagascar 2. Great job!

"Not threatening enough"?!

And this is the same Hasbro that made the original, sexist ponies that we're used to seeing pre-G4? Wow, times sure do change fast...

But then again, considering how Transformers Prime has PG-13 level violence and yet it retains a TV-Y7-FV rating with the intent of it being show to children, this hardly surprises me.

I often question if this show is really mean't for little kids.
Len-n-n Featured By Owner Jun 7, 2012
Check out the pilot for all MLP. It's G1, and called "Midnight Castle." Compared to certain parts in that show, FIM is actually kind of tame.

I loved the Manticore in the show!

Although, I'm not going to lie. This one is adorable. =3

I find that American cartoons are generally too afraid to cross boundaries (which sometimes includes becoming edgier in childrens' shows). Though, have you ever seen the average Japanese children's show? Talk about unconcerned with scaring the kids, lol
PanzerBanana Featured By Owner Sep 2, 2011
I saw that episode. Got a kick out of the Manticore. Nice work! =)

Lol. Some people just shouldn't be allowed into the realm of cartoons....oy My Little Ponies, scary, yep. It's like H.E.R.B.I.E replacing Human Torch because kids might set themselves on fire..
Limpurtikles Featured By Owner Sep 2, 2011  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Also one of the reasons I started to love this show. How many My Little Pony-cartoons/comics/etc has ponies battling a huge manticore?!

"Take that you ruffian!"
SlackersDeadAccount Featured By Owner Aug 31, 2011
I would've been surprised too.

He looks cuter here.

I find it funny when production companies can't make up their mind. Glad he didn't turn out all kiddy.
icythunder1 Featured By Owner Aug 31, 2011
if this is a show meant for kids... why is the end of the tail shaped like that? just pointing out stuff
talentualEmbrace Featured By Owner Sep 2, 2011
Manticores are usually depicted having scorpion tails.
icythunder1 Featured By Owner Sep 2, 2011
Manticores usually have human faces but she seems to have removed that since it might scare the kids
so so not removing inappropriate shapes seems like a good idea... no wait you have to have a mind such as mine to even notice. my bad.
sharkbyte3827 Featured By Owner Aug 31, 2011
I love the dopey design of your Manticore. I like your thought for the design, keeping it true to a cartoony feeling to keep from scaring the kids :). I love that face and giant main

The fantasy creatures (the Manticore, the Hydra, the various dragons, even the Cockatrice) are some of the best characters in the series!
SummerMelody454 Featured By Owner Aug 30, 2011  Hobbyist General Artist
I've actually wanted to draw the Manticore for some time while taking a break from drawing ponies. Though that hasn't happened in quite a while!! Your characters are so much fun to draw!
Rainbroach Featured By Owner Aug 30, 2011  Student Digital Artist
He does look rather dopey as you said, a harken back to the timid, sensitive Lions from older cartoons and such I'm sure. Topped off with the thorn in the paw scene that sealed the deal.
Majic-12 Featured By Owner Aug 30, 2011
"*I* would have been The Lion King if it wasn't for this damn tail!"

SpikelyWhiplash Featured By Owner Aug 30, 2011
Too scary for kids? I think a real manticore would be too scary for most adults. It's supposed to have a human head with shark teeth. Do you have any fricking idea how deeply unsettling that is to look at?

So yeah, I have no problem with this design.
