Writers' responsibilityI've been reading a collection of essays by Diana Wynne Jones called Reflections. It's a bunch of things she wrote for various magazines or talks, all collected together. Some of them float around various corners of the internet.
Anyway, one of the things that has stuck with me is the way stories affect children and adults. She has lots of examples of times people came up to her and told her how deeply some of her words affected them--or how much they were affected by the Piper at the Gates of Dawn chapter of the Wind in the Willows. (Incidentally, that's the only chapter I remember of that book.)
I've especially pondered her example of a blueprint.
Fantasy certainly does provide comfort--and who is not entitled to a little comfort if they can get it? For those who need that, it is the mind's perfect safety valve. But a child reading, say, a fairy story is doing a great deal more. Most fairy stories are practically perfect examples of narratives that fit the pattern of the mind at work

Skunk Reviews: Treehouse of Horror XXIIISPOILERS. I gave you fair warning.
Well, I will admit that this year's "Treehouse of Horror" special is better than last year's episode. I will admit that much.
Intro
It's topical, touching back onto the whole Mayan 2012 Doomsday prophecy BS that rings forth this year. And of course, it's because Mayan!Homer got out of being sacrificed to appease the gods, instead getting the Moe stand-in to become decapitated-with his head being kicked around for a cheap "soccer sucks" joke, followed by a cheap "blame Obama" joke. (Sounds like the writers were watching Mel Gibson's Apocalypto as they wrote this.) There really was no point to this introduction aside from some attempt at, perhaps, emphasizing the "Horror" by showing Mayan temple golems smash and destroy the Earth. I will admit that the Kang and Kodos cameo was somewhat amusing, screaming "What the hell?!" as one of the Mayan destroyers throws Lard Lad's donut at their spaceship.

Greatest Story Ever Hole

Please help - URGENT, a life is on the line.~Sahtori-Kamaya is suffering from cancer, and is in need of donations to pay for her chemotherapy. She does not have long to live.

I can't believe how little she has raised out of her goal...especially when I've watched non-life-threatening campaigns often overshoot their lofty goals.
I wish her the best of luck, and I'm hoping this spreads and she gets the support she needs, and deserves.

In the 1980s and 1990s, there were plenty of well-known animated television shows that are still remembered to this day. Everybody talks about He-Man, Thundercats, Voltron, GI Joe, Transformers, X-Men, Spiderman, Sonic SatAM, Swat Kats, Gargoyles, etc. The list goes on and on. But there are a few shows I remember that seem to have been left in the shadows. And one of those shows I want to talk about is the short lived Warner Brothers cartoon called "Road Rovers". This was one of my favorite shows as a teenager, and in my humble opinion, Road Rovers is one of the most memorable American cartoons from the 1990s. Sure, the series wasn't that special to the company that made it. But from what I understand, it created a generation of fans around the United States since its initial airing, which still holds up today despite that the series has faded into obscurity. What we are about.So what is this groups goal? It's all in the name. First, to showcase and share art that might not be seen by a lot of people due to it being overshadowed, or buried by the sheer amount of art that gets submitted every day. We browse the galleries nearly every day to look for art that likely gets overlooked among the thousands of images posted every day.
So what is an #Unburried-Treasures piece? Some basic guidelines are posted below:
1. Would I want that in my gallery? Most of the time it's "you bet!"
2. Would more people think it's a cool piece as well? I hope so.
3. Could this piece be suggested as a Daily Deviation? I hope that as well, but they don't have to be DD standard art to be featured here. They just have to be good or unique in their own way.
Art is extremely subjective. What works for us might not work for you, and vice versa. As a group we will find balance and be happy on common ground that we can agree to occupy together.
